Notes the continuous tradition of Ukrainian antisemitic prejudices in Canada and Jewish distrust of Ukrainians as a result of Ukrainian anti-Jewish actions during the Holocaust. Discusses activities on the part of Jewish individuals (Irwin Cotler, Sol Littman) and organizations Canadian Jewish Congress, B'nai B'rith) concerning the presence of Nazi war criminals in Canada, the formation in 1985 of the Deschenes Commission of Inquiry on War Criminals, the Ukrainian community's response in the formation of the Civil Liberties Commission of the Ukrainian Canadian Committee to defend its members against "unsubstantiated accusations, " and the enactment of the war crimes law in September 1987 which allows the trial of alleged war criminals. |
