First in the Field: Gault of the Patricias
In 1914, Hamilton Gault, at his own expense, raised Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry to fight for the Crown. Within nine days his new regiment was ready and was in action by the end of the year. Its fighting record was second to none.

The remarkable story of one man's love for a regiment which he raised out of his private funds and initiative at the outset of the Great War. It would initially be manned by active ex British servicemen recruited in Canada, but later university students from across Canada. A wealthy Montrealer, Gault lost a leg in the Ypres Salient in Flander's as well as his first wife thru a messy divorce, but perservered through to the end and brought the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry home after the war. Highly recommended.
