The Indians of the Paraguayan Chaco:

identity and economy
Front Cover
1 Review
U of Nebraska Press, 2002 - Social Science - 305 pages
Some forty thousand Native people live in the vast region of the Chaco in western Paraguay. They belong to five linguistic families and thirteen ethnic groups but share a common sense of ethnic identity founded on enduring values of reciprocity and equality. At the same time the Indians of the Chaco are one of the poorest groups in Paraguay, situated on the margins of the global economic system.

Based on extensive fieldwork and ongoing contact with local indigenous organizations in Paraguay, John Renshaw presents an overview of contemporary Indian life in the Paraguayan Chaco. He describes the subsistence and market economies, household and kinship systems, political organization, and the challenges of economic development. Renshaw also examines the experiences of indigenous organizations and the impact of development projects and considers whether it is possible to envisage a program of social and economic development that would respect and strengthen the Indians' sense of identity.

I have thusfar only read parts of this book, but am disturbed a bit by the disinformation that I have thusfar encountered. I do not know where Mr. Renshaw got some of his information about some of the religious connections and practices of the Nivacle in Mistolar. His information is just plain incorrect, period.
I know, because I lived among these people 24/7 for almost 6 months in 1982. I knew Siriaco Perez personally, and had many meetings with him. I personally know the vast majority of the Mormon missionaries that served with these wonderful people from the beginning of the Mormon church's involvement with them until well after Mr. Renshaw was there. I know that every one of us (I was one of those missionaries) were very fluent in Spanish, and many of us spoke at least limited conversational Nivacle (Chulupi). We were involved daily in their lives, and assisted in teaching on a daily basis. I personally instructed the choir for most of my tenure.
The book has many great stories, most of which I believe are accurate, but on some matters it appears the author either made things up to make a better storyline, or was given inaccurate and fabricated information which was never corroborated.
The Nivacle are a wonderful, simple, stalwart people, and I love them dearly. I am glad that there is an effort to ensure that their history is not lost for future generations.
