In this examination of the unsavory characters working behind the record-industry scenes, Farr explores ground similar to that covered by Fredric Dannen in Hit Men (Vintage, 1991). Farr has smaller fish to fry, however; while Dannen dealt with the politics and personalities of major record labels, Farr looks at the men behind some of America's more influential independent companies. He profiles Def Jam label head and rock impresario Rick Rubin and Nashville producer Tony Brown, among others, and provides a tortuous account of the legal battles being waged over Ruthless Records, a successful independent rap label. This last difficult segment aside, Farr has written an entertaining and highly readable book that is nevertheless leached of significant insight by his obvious contempt for most of his subjects.
