Originally published in 1891. PREFACE: The materials for the composition of this little book were collected and arranged from contemporary authorities, and such ancient records as have come down to us, some years ago; when during a residence in Italy, I had felt the same want of such information as it is intended to furnish. Since those days increased attention has been directed to mediaeval history; and especially to that of Rome and Italy. The subject has been taken up by writers whose researches have thrown new light on the subject, and made it most attractive. Yet the study of complicated and necessarily voluminous details can only be carried out by those who have leisure hours at their disposal......Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
