About the author (2003)

David Cleary is a versatile writer, publishing popular books and articles on diverse topics such as marketing strategies, retirement, and travel guides. Born David Powers Cleary on January 8, 1915, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Leo John Cleary, an engineer, and Gertrude Powers, a speech instructor. Cleary earned his B.A. from Michigan State University in 1936. Cleary worked as an editor for Buick Magazine in Detroit for four years. In 1940 he moved on to work at the successful advertising agency Young & Rubicam, where he worked his way up from a copy-contact in the Detroit office to vice president and associate creative director of the New York City office. A freelance writer since 1938, Cleary's articles appeared in numerous magazines, including American Legion, Coronet, Forum, Southern Living, Today's Health, and Pan American Clipper. He wrote the book, Great American Brands: The Success Formulas That Made Them Famous, in 1981. Anatomy of the Amazon Gold Rush was published in 1990; Organizational Change and the Management of Expertise, with Janette Webb, and Retire Smart: Sound Advice to Help You Make Your Retirement Years Happy, Healthy, and Active, cowritten with his wife Virginia, were published in 1993. Cleary's Rough Guide to Brazil was published in 1994. A member of the Marketing Research Association, Cleary resides in Tavares, Florida.
